Empowering dyslexic learners at Dyslexia Alliance

Welcome

Welcome to Dyslexia-Alliance. My name is Betsy Stevens.  I am a certified dyslexia practitioner and I provide specialized dyslexia tutoring.  I am also a mother of four, two of whom are dyslexic.  Helping kids with dyslexia gain skills and confidence and aiding them to tap into their full potential is a true labor of love for me.

I believe the dyslexic brain is an amazing brain, and I am honored to be a part of the learning process with every child.  Empowering dyslexic learners takes an alliance between parent, child and practitioner.  I would love for you to add me to your team.

At Dyslexia Alliance, my tailored programs focus on empowering dyslexic learners to reach their full potential.  With personalized support and evidence-based strategies, I create a nurturing learning environment where every student can thrive.  I am dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of individuals with dyslexia, helping them build confidence and achieve success.

My approach....

1  I use the Socratic Questioning approach.

When I present a new concept, I ask questions that allow the student to discover  the new concept. This process is called Socratic questioning, and it is done using a multi-sensory method for optimal understanding.  This means that we utilize auditory, visual, kinesthetic, and tactile components to encourage your child to discover the concept on their own.  This is a profound experience and is beautiful to witness.  Engagement leads to learning at an elevated level.

2  I develop an individualized plan for intervention.

I assess and collect data each lesson to be diagnostic and prescriptive; therefore, every lesson is individualized for the student.  Tutoring looks different for each student, because I look at the big picture from reading evaluations and create a learning profile that shows both intellectual skills as well as academic skills.  This allows me to develop an intervention plan that includes scaffolding for areas of weakness.  I also incorporate the student's areas of strength in each lesson to aid in learning as well as instill confidence.  The student and I also generate achievable goals that we can work towards.

3  We play!

We use play as much as possible to keep the student engaged and wanting to come back for more.  While we play we learn the essentials in each lesson, including decoding, encoding, vocabulary study, morphology, fluency, comprehension and syllable type study.
